Step 1: Determine the type of materials to which the tape will be sticking
Will the tape be applied to metal, plastic, concrete, cardboard, glass, etc.
Step 2: How long does the tape need to stick?
Does the application require a permanent or temporary bond? If temporary, must the tape remove cleanly
Step 3: What type of Surface will the tape be sticking?
Is the surface of this material. Smooth, porous, irregular, or rough?
Step 4: What are the environmental conditions of the application?
To what temperatures will the tape be exposed? Is there high humidity or moisture? Are there any chemicals used in the process? Is there direct sunlight or UV light? What is the lowest temperature to which the tape will be exposed?

How much stress is the adhesive expected to take, and in what direction is the stress expected to be applied? Does the tape need to be flexible? Would a certain thickness be more appropriate than another? How will the tape be applied? By hand? By machine?
Step 6: Is there anything Unique about the application that may have an impact on its success or failure?
Does the application require a colored backing? Are there specifications that the tape must
comply with (e.g., military or ASTM)? Does the tape require any conformance certifications? Is the origin of manufacturing important?
By answering each of these questions, you will be well on your way to narrowing down the best potential options in choosing the best tape for your application.
